The accountant slash actuary slash wedding singer was nothing like Amy expected. The meeting location was about a twenty-minute drive outside town, during which she kept conversation neutral, discussing the wedding and the things that still needed to be done.

“I have three other guys with me usually, but it’s Wednesday, so—”

“They’re at work?” Amy guessed.

“Once we thought music would be our full-time gig, but life has a funny way of changing plans on you,” the guy joked.

Amy glanced at Logan. You could say that again.

“I already know your work, but maybe you could play one of your CDs for Amy,” Logan suggested.

“Sure.” The musician stood up and started riffling through some stacks on his desk. Then he stopped and picked up his guitar.

“You know that there’s only one way to see if this music really works,” the bandleader said. His mouth crooked into a smile. “The question is, Will people dance to it?”

“Oh.” Amy released a nervous laugh. “Well, the first dance song is . . .”

But the guy started playing the first few notes before she could finish. She looked from him to Logan, who was smirking. “You told him the first dance song?”

“It was a wild guess, but I remember you and Hallie always saying that you’d want to dance to the same song as your mother did at her wedding.”

Amy flushed, feeling foolish at admitting such a thing so openly, especially when she’d once imagined dancing to it with Logan at their own wedding.

“Well,” she managed to say. “You can’t go wrong with Sinatra. I’m just surprised you’d remember something silly like that.”

“It wasn’t silly,” he said. “And of course I remember. I remember everything.” His gaze was steady on hers, and she felt the heat rise in her face, forcing her to look away.

The tension building between them was as loud as all those years of silence. She motioned to the singer. “This sounds pretty good to me.”

“It does, but I think he’s right. Should we see if it passes the test?” He waggled his eyebrows as his mouth twitched.

She froze, then stared at him. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. But he was. Why?

“You don’t mean . . .”

“That we should dance? Since when would you turn down an opportunity to try something new?”

Since you broke my heart, Amy thought. Since you fell in love with someone else. Since I lost my sidekick, my best friend. Since all those adventures, however small, ended.

“You do owe me,” he said, giving her one of those wide-eyed looks that she never could resist. The look he used to give on those cold, blustery days when she’d rather be inside than out but he couldn’t resist the call of the water, convincing her that it was the best time to go, that they’d have the beach all to themselves. And she’d agree, because the thought of it just being the two of them was all she needed to hear. Anytime. Anywhere.

“For what?” she asked.

“For not dancing with me last night.” He gave her a pointed look.
